Pill Man’s 3D Travels, 2017 -illustration + C4D render + PSD

Pill Man came into my awareness through a dream I had in 2017. I sketched, then colored this illustration, immediately upon waking up that morning. It wasn’t until a few months later did I complete, Pill Man’s 3D Travels.

Pill Man became a vehicle by which I used to explore all the exciting creative domains within Cinema 4D. I learned modeling, texturing, rigging, simulating, lighting, and rendering skills as a result of the determination I had; to make this vision that I’d had in a dream, into as much of reality as I could.

Once I had Pill Man walking- I needed a point A and B, to make a story. In order to conceptualize the chemical origin of Pill Man (an approach I deemed necessary to imbue the character with the mystique with which it had been presented to me in my dream), I constructed a centripetally symmetrical environment in Cinema 4D that blended the pharmaceutical and severe tones of how I was conceiving the, “Pill” of Pill Man, with the tones of how I conceived the second half of the name as having- divine feminine/immaculate conception.

In short, where does pill come from? Bottles.

Unfortunately my rigidity to the concept meant I wasn’t going to get an A and a B from the architecture of the scene because naturally. it was circular…

I needed a character that I could believe in forever and that meant I had to justify to myself every single element of how he was designed. The driving principle of this desire to justify how Pill Man was presented, in the exceedingly meticulous way that I did, was my belief that, to produce digital imagery (made of subpixels) with any extraneous brightness value- as deemed necessary by the producer of said digital imagery, in order to ethically communicate the meaning of their imagery: is unethical because it would be to distribute more energy and cause more eye strain on the viewers.

This is when I turned to my sketchbook to storyboard a scene that I found trigonometrically justified to warrant a fantastic teleportation. This way I would be able to describe a chemical/metaphysical origin for Pill Man where this, reductive color and geometric aesthetic could be imbedded within what I could, in future installments of the story (knowing that by the end of this first story I’d be capable of starting another one from a tremendously more developed 3D skillset from where I had started in the beginning of the first story) determine to be another realm-akin to a dream.
